Greetings from Colorado

ColoradoFlagScott and I are on the road and once again enjoying life in the Airstream. July finds us in the Centennial State, currently in Colorado Springs, with plans to spend the next six weeks in various locations before hitting the road for Santa Barbara.

Huh? Believe me, we also are scratching our heads about this year’s itinerary. We knew we’d have to cut this trip shorter than we’d like as two premier events await us early this fall. First, the Davis males’ every-other-year salmon-fishing odyssey requires Scott to be in Washington state in late September. Even more exciting, a new grandchild is expected in Nashville in mid-October, and as this is my daughter’s first, you can bet we’ll be there for some time.

So with all that in mind, we started with the idea of heading north to cooler climes but not wanting to drive as much as the 8,000-plus miles we did last year. Fly-fishing, mountains and at least one baseball game were also factors to be considered, and Colorado emerged as a sensible choice.

Then I read an article about the 100 best RV parks in America, and Ocean Mesa caught my eye. I’ve been through but never seen the sights in Santa Barbara, so we ended up tacking that on to the end of the trip.

For now, we are just happy to be out of inferno-like Phoenix. Weather-wise, Colorado has experienced its own heat wave, but it’s just plain rude to complain about 96 degrees – the temperature here when we pulled in last week – when the Valley of the Sun is making national news at 119.

It’s cooled down this week and at a pleasant 73 as I write this. Forecasts call for a possible afternoon shower. Scott is on the Arkansas River, hopefully hooking a good number of rainbows and I’m researching opportunities for local Fourth of July fun. Other than that, my afternoon calls for nothing more strenuous than a good read in my lawn chair under the Cottonwood trees.

Lots more to come … I hope you’ll ride along, and as always we’d love to hear from you. Just use the Contact form or you can email me at janie@cowgirlchronicles.com

P.S. We have a new traveling companion I’ll introduce soon. (Bubba passed over to the great Ecosphere in the Sky just before we left the Oregon Coast last October, and I confess I’m still kind of neutral about this new guy. But at least I don’t have to carry him into restaurants in my purse.)

I’m dying to know what the new travelling companion is! Oh, and by the way, it’s still okay to complain about 96 degree heat!

Hope the trout fishing is good… wish I were there…

Hi Karen – so glad to see you here! I haven’t been fishing yet but Scott’s on Spinney Reservoir today and hopefully, the fish gods will be kind to him. I wish you were here, too, but I understand you are at your cabin on Lake Erie – sounds fun! Hugs to you – Janie
