The Countdown to Foaling

The big black mare Lucky is two months away from foaling. She received her last Pneumabort immunization over the weekend. In a month she’ll get a 4-way and West Nile Virus booster so she can pass those antibodies on to her foal. Momma, as she is affectionately called now, is looking very pregnant!

Her foaling stall is ready. It’s a 24 foot by 48 foot open pen with a shade/weather cover over an eight foot by 12 foot section. Plenty of room to move around while foaling and space for two afterward.

Lucky has been a broodmare her entire life and has had many foals – she’s 16 years old. All her previous foals have been born in a pasture with other mares and babies. We decided that a big open stall was the best option for her foaling here. Although she mainly stays in an acre pasture with my other horses , in the pen she’ll be safe from the others who haven’t experienced a foal being born in their company. Momma will be able to see them all from her foaling pen 20 feet away and avoid any potential aggressive behavior from the other horses.

Lucky is due in early March. We estimate March 6 based on when she was bred. This date is 338 days of gestation from her last breeding date of April 4, 2021. However, she could foal anywhere from 320 – 343 days and she was first covered on April 2, 2021. Since we don’t know her typical foaling timeframe it will be a surprise!
